Ms. Lerato Gumbi has over 18 years' professional experience in Strategic Human Resources. Throughout this period of her career she has accumulated a range of skills across all levels of strategic HR advisory services which include extensive technical knowledge and practical experience in recruitment administration, labour relations, organizational development (OD), and talent management. Her peers regard her as a strategist, top-performer and a committed practitioner in the field of Strategic Human resources

Lerato currently holds a position of Chief Human Capital Officer (CHCO) at the Road Accident Fund (RAF) which employs over 2800 people across different disciplines. She is responsible for providing leadership direction and guidance on strategic initiatives in order to deliver on the mandate of the RAF. Among other priorities, she is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Human Capital Division, which include attracting, finding and retaining the best talent for the organisation, as well as continually scanning the environment for new innovations in the human capital space.

Prior to joining the RAF, she served as the Head of Department: Human Resources Management and Development, at the Ekurhuleni Municipality. She has also worked for industry giants such as the Department of Science and Technology, Arivia.Kom, City of Johannesburg and Eskom.

Despite her demanding work commitments, Lerato manages to find quality time to motivate and inspire other people to reach their full potential and to follow their dreams, the passion she acquired when she began her career in social work. It is also for this reason that she finds pleasure in, and is at ease with explaining, sharing, and providing an in-depth understanding on subject matters that are close to her heart; and even going as far as offering tactical steps on how to tackle everyday challenges. Lerato is forward-thinking and her management abilities, ethical and professional work standards exemplify the level of leadership necessary to transform Human Capital and take it to greater heights. This supports her Mantra which is: "LIFT AS YOU RISE".

Although she acknowledges that it is not easy to create that much talked about balance in life, she takes time to focus on herself. She loves a good laugh, enjoys live music, reading books, and is a social golfer.

As a seasoned practitioner, Lerato is also associated with the following professional bodies:

  • South African Board for People Practices as a Master HR Professional: Generalist;
  • Institute of People Management as an IPM Executive Professional (IPMEP); and
  • Institute of Board of Directors South Africa.
Lerato holds a Master's Degree in Commerce (M Comm - LPC), and a Master's Diploma in Human Resource Management. She also has a completed four years Bachelor of Social Science Degree in Social Work, which launched her career as a Social Worker before changing course and entering the world of HR.
